Uniform

The Oak Flats High School uniform promotes the schools image in the general community. There are important benefits for the students of the school as it is held in high regard by the community. It is in the best interests of the school and students alike that full school uniform be worn at all times. School uniforms are designed to be neat, practical and of a good quality.
Uniforms are important because:

  • they help maintain high personal standards
  • encourage high self esteem
  • promote and enhance school spirit
  • reduces to a minimum undesirable distinctions because of clothing
  • they increase security for students
  • they ensure safety in circumstances such as practical subjects
  • promotes a sense of belonging to the school

This policy was developed in consultation with parents and our wider community to provide a range of options for our students.
Where parents believe our current uniform does not meet the needs of their child. They should discuss the situation with the Principal.

PROCEDURES

  • Students are to wear full school uniform at all times.
  • If for any reason a student is unable to wear school uniform, a parent or carer should write a note explaining reasons.
  • The note should be sighted by a deputy before school and a uniform pass issued.
  • Roll call teachers must issue a breach notice to all students in incorrect uniform and record the misdemeanour as appreciate in the back of their roll.
  • The uniform supervisor is to collect notes from the rolls and check the uniform record in the back of the roll.
  • Repeated lack of uniform will result in consequences and parents being contacted.
  • Where parents believe the uniform does not cater for their child, parents should discuss the situation with the Principal. It appropriate an exemption may be requested.

PLEASE NOTE

    • Patterned jackets, coloured sloppy joes, denim jeans or track pants are NOT permitted.
    • Appropriate black shoes are required in some practical lessons enclosed shoes are a mandatory Occupational Health and Safety requirements. Parents maybe contacted to be asked to bring appropriate shoes to school.
    • Jewellery is permitted but should be simple – one ring, small plain earrings (not large hoops).
    • Makeup is not appropriate or necessary with the wearing of school uniforms.
    • Black tights are not an approved uniform item for girls.
    • Sport and PE
      • Pupils change in and out of sport inform for PE lessons
      • Students are permitted to wear the official green and white Oak Flats High School sports shirt to school on sport Thursday

All items of school uniform are available from Lowes Menswear, Stockland Shellharbour, phone: 4297 4516. If any family requires financial assistance to purchase a uniform, an approach should be made to the school Principal. The school endures to keep a supply of good quality, second hand uniforms that can be obtained from the school’s administration office. Donations are always gratefully received.

STAFF ROLES
Role of all teachers

  • Students to remove all non uniform tops
  • Promote the wearing of school uniform to all students
  • Advise the uniform officer of persistent offenders
  • Ensure subject specific requirements for safety during practical work are met (eg enclosed shores).
  • Ensure students excluded from practical work due to safety concerns are directly supervised and have alternative work to complete

ROLE OF DEPUTY PRINCIPAL/PRINCIPAL

  • Support teachers and the uniform officer in promoting the wearing of school uniform in all classes
  • Interview students and take appropriate actions as per school student management plan
  • Promote the value of uniform to parents
  • Discuss with the parents requests for exemptions or variations

JEWELLERY: Jewellery is to be restricted to a maximum of studs or sleepers
for ear wear (no bigger than a 10c coin); a signet ring; a single plain bracelet; a single
